How To "SEO" Guide
Hi All As a novice web designer, and the creator of www.GetThings4Free.co.uk I wanted to try and optimize my website as much as possible for search engines. I've done many websites - but this was the first that I have done that I actually wanted to be found on the Internet. I found many tips on the web that I used to get my site SEO friendly and here they are:- 1) Make sure that your pages contain the META Charset Tag and it is set to: "iso-8859-1" this is the character encoding page that bots / spiders use to process the page. 2) Make sure that your page title is no more than 60 characters long, and I recommend that it should contain keywords or keyword phrases that are applicable to your website. e.g: Get a Free Playstation 3 (PS3), Nintendo Wii, WiiFit 3) Ensure that the Meta Description Tag is a maximum of 150 characters and contains keyword phrases and keywords that are applicable to your site:- e.g: Simple guide on how to GetThings4Free: Free Playstation 3, PS3, PSP, Nintendo Wii, Wii Fit, iPod Touch, iPod Nano, Xbox 360. 4) Keywords - using the Keywords Tag "META NAME" ensure that it contains keywords and keyword phrases applicable to your site. The maximum number of characters recommended for this is 874. Try not to repeat keywords / phrases as this may lead to yout TAG being disqualified. e.g.: Playstation 3, Sony Playstation 3, PS3, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo, Wii, Microsoft Xbox, Xbox 360, xbox360, Apple iPod, iPod, iPod Touch, Apple iPod Touch, iPod Nano, Nano, Touch, Apple iPod Nano, iPod Shuffle, shuffle, Apple iPod Shuffle, Apple, iPhone, Apple iPhone, Sony Bravia HDTV, Sony, Bravia, Playstation Portable, PSP, Sony PSP, Panasonic HD1080p Plasma, Samsung Blu Ray DVD Player, blu-ray, blu ray, Samsung HT-Q100 Home Theatre Kit, FreebieJeebies, GetThings4Free, Sony Playstion 2, Free Playstation, Xbox Games, Nintendo Wii Fit, Wii Fit, Wii Games, PS3 Games, Xbox Games, Playstation Games, Sony Playstation Games, Sony Playstation 3 Games, Playstation 3 Controllers, Wii Controllers, Exceem 5) Bots / Spiders will analyse a page for IMG ALT text - this is the text that appears when you hover your mouse over an image. Bots / Spiders will analyse your page for this text, and therefore try and write as much text for each image to describe it as possible, if your page is very image orientated. Have a look at www.getthings4free.co.uk and hover over one of the images and you will see an example of the above. 6) The next useful thing to do is "backlinking" - using sites such as Qassia. Backlinking, bascially is "you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours" - If you link to someone's website and they link to you - that's a backlink. The more backlinks the better when it comes to Google and MSN's search engines. All adding to the credibility of your site and your SEO. Once you have done the above, the next thing to do is to submit it to search engines. I found scrubtheweb a good source to do this, it also offers a meta-tag analyzer to check all of the above.
