First Steps to creating a website
As a "self taught" web developer, I thought it would be useful for me to post what I think are the basics that people need to start with, in understanding how to create a website. In web development there are quite a few acronyms and therefore, it is useful to know what they stand for:- Terminology FTP - File Transfer Protocol You will use an FTP Client to FTP the files on to the hosting companies web servers - so that people on the web can see your website. HTML - Hyper Text Mark-up Language This is the language that most web pages are created in. Things have developed a lot since this original language was created, but many of the websites you will see today will be using a form of HTML. ISP - Internet Service Provider Many ISP's will provide you with disk space to host your website, and it is therefore important to have an ISP. I started off creating websites, by making a very simple page saying "hello". At the time I used FrontPage Express (this was a Microsoft Webpage creating program) which I don't think is available anymore, although you can make web pages in Microsoft Word. Open Word, write Hello and save the file as a .html file. Then open this file in Internet Explorer. This is your first webpage! I've come along way since those days, and now develop and create sites using Open Source applications such as Joomla. Joomla is a content management system, which works on the concept of no requirement of web site creation at all! Once the template is created, you log in via a hidden screen and add and move content as you wish. This is great when you need to update a website quickly. An example of Joomla in use is at www.getthings4free.co.uk or visit www.joomla.org. I like Joomla, as its always evolving and is so simple to use. |
